Naples & Pompeii Tour

Step into Pompeii's streets frozen by Vesuvius in 79 AD, then savour authentic pizza in the street-food capital of Italy — a day that spans 2,000 years.

Duration: 10.0 hours
Group size: Up to 6 people per Car
Departures from: Rome, Rome train stations, Rome airports, Civitavecchia

This tour pairs one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites in the world with one of Italy's most vibrant, chaotic, and delicious cities. We depart from Civitavecchia Port, Rome hotels, or Fiumicino Airport early in the morning to make the most of both destinations.

Pompeii: Frozen in Time

In 79 AD, an eruption of Mount Vesuvius buried the prosperous Roman city of Pompeii under several metres of volcanic ash, preserving it almost perfectly for nearly two millennia. Walking the ancient cobblestone streets today you encounter intact Roman houses, bakeries with their grinding stones, a complete amphitheatre, lupanar (brothel), forum, and the haunting plaster casts of citizens surprised by the eruption.

We recommend 2.5 to 3 hours inside the archaeological park — enough time to cover the essential highlights without rushing. Audio guides or a licensed guide can be arranged at an additional cost.

Naples: Pizza, Art, and Chaos

Naples is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe and the birthplace of pizza. Its UNESCO-listed historic centre (centro storico) follows the original Greek street grid from 470 BC. Key highlights include Spaccanapoli (the arrow-straight street that splits the old city), the underground Naples Underground (Greek-Roman tunnels), and the magnificent Piazza del Plebiscito with its Palazzo Reale.

Allow time for a proper Neapolitan lunch: a wood-fired margherita or marinara at a historic pizzeria (the original margherita was created in Naples in 1889), followed by a sfogliatella pastry and an espresso standing at the bar — the proper Neapolitan way.

All tolls and parking included. The drive from Civitavecchia to Naples is approximately 2.5 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

In peak season (April–October) we strongly recommend pre-booking Pompeii tickets to avoid queues at the entrance. We can arrange skip-the-line access at an additional cost. The site can get very busy by 10:00.
Yes, Mount Vesuvius can be included in the itinerary if you depart early (by 07:00 at the latest). The walk to the crater rim takes approximately 30–40 minutes each way. This would mean a shorter visit to Naples or Pompeii.
Civitavecchia to Pompeii is approximately 2 hours 45 minutes by motorway. The return journey is the same. We recommend departing by 07:00.
Yes. Naples has a reputation that is largely outdated. The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a lively, fascinating place visited by millions of tourists every year. As with any major city, we recommend standard precautions with valuables.
